A Career in Childcare

A Career in Childcare

We want Scotland to be the best place to grow up. And the provision of quality early learning and childcare is one of the most important ways that we can make this happen.

So we need the right people to deliver the best for Scotland. We need passionate, patient and committed people to help us deliver childcare all across Scotland. People with a range of skills, experience and qualifications. But above all, people who understand how important it is give the next generation the best start in life.

The Scottish Social Services Council(SSSC)

www.sssc.uk.com (opens in a new window) regulates the early years and childcare workforce in Scotland (except Childminders). Workers will require to register with the SSSC and to do this they will have to hold or be working towards a recognised qualification. More details on registration and qualifications is available on the website, by telephone at 0845 60 30 891, or by emailing enquiries@sssc.uk.com.

Childminders are required to register their service with the Care Inspectorate and detailed guidance on Registering and Running a Childminding Service is available on their website. Pre-Registration Training for those considering childminding as a career option can be accessed in most local authority areas, contact your local Childcare or Family Information Service for further details.

It is not currently necessary for childminders to hold specific qualifications. However, if a long term career working with children is planned, there are some advantages to obtaining qualifications. Many local authorities provide non-accredited training courses that are accessible to childminders following registration free of charge.

The Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) provides advice and support for new and established childminders, see their website www.childminding.org (opens in a new window) for further details.

Your local Childcare or Family Information Service may have some adverts for jobs in childcare and information on relevant training opportunities under the Job Vacancies & Training category on this website’s search bar.
